The noise it produces is similar to a fan on a low setting, kind of a white noise so to speak. The filters are reasonably priced if you find them on sale-they are currently on sale for 29.99 (reg 39.99) & I replace them every 6 months. The carbon pre filter is much cheaper when bought from your local home improvement store, they sell sheets of carbon that you can cut to fit. I have a cat in my small apartment so I use it to clean the air of cat litter dust and dander... because of the litter dust, I've already had to replace both the pre- and HEPA filter way before their time, but I guess that just means it's working. The pre-filter can can also be vacuumed or shaken out to clear the dust. The noise is minimal, but I'm used to having fans running in my room already... I would definitely recommend the Hunter 30057 as a cheap HEPA purifier. Also note that it takes a while for the initial plastic smell of the parts to fade, several weeks in my case. 73 of 74 people found the following review helpful Great air purifier for the price, May 15, 2005 By  Bens Luscious Hog (NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: Honeywell 16200 Desktop HEPA Air Purifier (Kitchen) Pros: -size, very compact -can be placed horizontally or vertically to save space -does a very good job of removing particles from the air -ionizer removes odors -price, try to find an air purifier/ionizer for under $40 Cons: -fully effective for rooms 110 square feet or smaller -noise level (at low it is slightly noticable, on medium you have to turn up the tv a few notches, on high it sounds like a fan or air conditioner on full blast) For the price, it does a terrific job in smaller rooms with the only drawback being the noise (which on low is very bearable). I leave it on high all day while I'm at work, switch to medium in the evening and low at night and it does the trick. Keep in mind any air purifier that has a high output fan and is highly efficient and is going to move a significant amount of air is going to have some fan noise. Don't buy this or any high output fan-based purifier thinking it is whisper quiet. The only way to get around this is to have a whole-house central-air purifier where the mechanics, fans and motors are in the garage and the duct work is throughout the house. This would be the only way to eliminate noise completely and still have a high output air purifier. ---- Pros ---- The price is affordable. Check around for the best price. When you drop big coin on a pricey, hospital quality filter you can expect perfection in performance and air quality. When you spend $75-$125 like I did on this air filter then you get what you pay for. This medium room purifier with "HEPA Type" filters is said to be about 95% effective at removing air born allergens. The two HEPA type filters are permanent along with the secondary outer carbon filter for bigger air particles. The ionizer is also fairly effective at changing the overall smell of the room. If you choose not to have the ion smell you can simply ignore the button that turns that feature on. I've owned this filter for about 3 months now and it will occasionally buzz a little at high speeds. However, with mine it is easily fixed by tapping the top or by adjusting the tightness of the back plate. Low and medium speeds are pretty quite though. It has great dimensions as well making it... Dust, moisture, etc - it virtually all sends her into a sneezing fit. Congestion, stuffy nose, and other annoyances frequent her days. So anything to give some relief is a God-sent. However, I found myself extremely skeptical as to the actual effectiveness of these "air filtration devices". That is - until I spoke to my uncle who owns this same model. He said that it really helped to remove the dusty, musty smell from his living room. This was a gift for her for Christmas 2008, but I had considered one of these last year. I am not sure what this will mean for the life of the filter, as I have vaccumed it several times and it still looks dirty. However there seems to be less dust in the room and my son says he has less allergy issues at night, so - so far so good. I origninally rated this 4 stars, but would downgrade to 2 stars. I have owned this for almost a year now, the fan now makes an annoying rattling sound that lessens somewhat on the high setting. The 'clean filter' light has come on and stayed on even though I vacuum it weekly. For what I paid I am disappointed in the performance.
